We are seeking a qualified HCPC registered speech and language therapist who has experience of working with young people with autism and complex learning difficulties. This is a full-time permanent position; however, the opportunity to work part time on a three/four-day basis will also be considered. Regular clinical supervision is included.
The Loddon School is a residential school for 30 young people with severe learning disabilities and complex needs. The school offers a unique approach to therapy and education, and you must demonstrate a keen interest in working collaboratively and creatively to support communication within an educational and residential environment. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with regular clinical supervision included.
As part of the role, you will carry out functional assessments of language and communication using both formal and informal approaches. You will be expected to set individualised targets, write intervention plans, and deliver therapy across specialist, targeted and universal levels. You need to share information in a way that is accessible and practical for a range of staff members. In addition, you will deliver regular training sessions to support the use of communications strategies across the waking day, ensuring consistent and holistic support for the young people.
Therapy at Loddon aims to be fully embedded within the day-to-day environment. You will work closely with a wide range of staff members, including teachers, learning and care staff, the behaviour support team and occupational therapy, to support the young people’s communication, wellbeing and participation. You must be confident in working as part of a multidisciplinary team, building strong relationships and supporting others to implement therapeutic approaches throughout the day.
The school is currently in an exciting phase of developing the speech and language therapy provision, with the introduction of new AAC systems, a shift towards aided language stimulation, and a commitment to becoming more neuroaffirming in our approach. We are looking for a therapist who is passionate about service development and can help lead this shift in practice. You will need to be creative, flexible and responsive to staff feedback. It is essential that you have experience providing specialist support to individuals with learning disabilities and/or complex needs.
We are committed to supporting your professional development. You will have access to internal training, such as the PROACT-SCIPr-UK® approach used at Loddon, as well as external CPD opportunities based on your learning needs and interests.
If you are interested in this role, we would like to welcome you to visit the school informally to meet the team and find out more about how we work.
